For my Critical Teaching Manifesto, I was heavily influenced by Hojeong Kim's Youtube Video: "Teaching Philosophies Series".
Throughout Kim's video she talks about believing in yourself but more importantly, going out and making mistakes. As a first year teacher, there will be many obstacles I will come across that will challenge me. I need to remember that the process of learning involves making mistakes.
I have always been a person, student, daughter, coach, girlfriend, sister and friend that strives to do their very best in all my work. I take things to heart when I do not achieve greatness. But especially as a first year teacher, I will learn by doing, and by falling over (Richard Branson). As Audrey Aamodt shared in her YouTube video, "Towards Creating Critical Teaching Manifestos", she states, "I practice humility and vulnerability through a pedagogy of mistakes". This statement resonate with me and my teaching practices.
I understand that due to my privileges I have a lot of unlearning to do in order to fully understand others around me. I will make mistakes with the language I use and the stories, perspective and understandings I have ingrained in me. I will work on anti-oppressive practices in my teaching and classroom environment to create a more just and fair society for my students. I want to strive to celebrate diversity in my classroom but I have to know that I will make mistakes along the way but those mistakes will benefit me and my students in the long run.
I often hear myself tell other, friends, family, students or athletes that I coach, that it is O.K. to make mistakes. I continuously encourage my peers to make mistakes because I know that there is growth behind those mistakes being made. As a teacher, I need to practice what I preach. Below I have attached a poster I found that shares statements that I would want my students to practice when they're feeling discouraged. I want my students to train their brain to focus on a growth mindset. These statements are a great starting point.
